Elizabeth Anne Zimmer
Dr. Liz Zimmer is a Research Biologist at NMNH's Laboratories of Analytical Biology and the Department of Botany. She is an Adjunct Professor at U Maryland and Duke. She earned her B.S. from Cornell in 1973 and her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1981. Her dissertation explored DNA variation in the blood proteins of apes and humans; her thesis figures of restriction maps have been used in the textbook "Molecular Biology of the Cell." As a postdoc at Stanford and a faculty member at LSU, Liz developed DNA markers for understanding relationships among green plants. She was recruited by NMNH in 1990 and works closely with botany staff on projects involving Pacific and Latin American plants. Dr. Zimmer has published over seventy scientific articles, edited two books on "Methods in Molecular Evolution, " and trained over 35 postgraduate students, over 20 undergrads and 5 high school students in her laboratory. During the 2004-2005 academic year she was a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University.
